Join us for a special event with Ted Pappas, Executive Editor of The Encyclopedia Britannica, as he shares stories from his distinguished career and discusses Britannica’s 250th Anniversary Collector’s Edition and TRUE GRIT: CLASSIC TALES OF PERSEVERANCE.

Encyclopaedia Britannica is the oldest continuously published and revised work in the English language, its 1st Edition published in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1768.  Ted will talk about the secret to such success, both to historic companies like Britannica and to individuals in their personal and professional lives. He will highlight the many challenges Britannica has faced since the 18th century, answering such teasers as “Why did King George III instruct Britons to destroy Britannica’s 1st Edition?”  “Why was Britannica’s introduction of biographies in the 1770s such a costly move for the start-up company?”  and “How is Britannica responsible for such novelties as the Coca-Cola bottle, The New Yorker’s monocled mascot, and even the Mile High Club?”  And he will show how the key to Britannica’s longevity was the same key to the success for ten pioneers of history, individuals highlighted in his latest book True Grit: Classic Tales of Perseverance.

How did the great men and women who changed the world actually do it? Were they simply smarter and more talented than the rest of us? What was their secret?

The accomplishments of the great are widely known, but their many battles with adversity, frequent setbacks and defeats, and the personal and professional hardships they endured along the way and ultimately drew strength from–this is the dark underside of achievement that is seldom illuminated.

This book examines ten historic figures–from the world of sports and popular culture to literature, business, science, statecraft, and social outreach–and highlights how they left their legendary mark on the world. Their recipes for success were many and varied, but all had one key ingredient in common: that life-changing mix of passion and perseverance popularly known as grit.
